The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, documentation and verification of new product design for PowerNow™ lawn & garden power tools. This position is the project lead for batteries and chargers and also leads technical analysis of new and improved designs for motors, and tool controls, including concept development, analysis, prototyping, and testing. To be considered for this position, apply online: www.blount.com/careers RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: •Apply electrical/electronic engineering knowledge to the design and development of new power tools that are robust to manufacturing variation and customer use, as well as changes and enhancements to existing products •Solve complex engineering problems at the component through system level; perform risk analysis and provide electrical engineering and technical support for new products; and be responsible for design modifications as required •Provide constructive feedback in design reviews, give recommendations on product design systems, and prepare reports of test results and make recommendations for product improvements •Coordinate and qualify the selection of motor, motor suppliers, motor technologies, and battery cells, necessary to achieve product specifications in terms of power/weight ratio, run time and durability, while paying attention to cost drivers •Ensure motor selections are qualified and tested according to project specifications, regulatory requirements and meet target cost •Develop technical specifications for batteries and chargers. Work with laboratory to ensure Blount has capabilities to verify that product meets specifications •Support new and/or modified cell and/or battery pack designs to assure proper qualification before implementation including regulatory, electrical and mechanical performance •Stay abreast of current and new technologies and suppliers in Li-Ion battery industry •Development of hardware/software necessary to insure proper operation and safety thresholds of power tools are achieved •Coordinate and insure appropriate manufacturing and assembly techniques are employed at chosen suppliers •Develop and manage test regimes and work with suppliers to develop necessary test equipment to assure reliability levels are designed and built into circuitry and implement corrective actions for product design related issues; provide technical support for Marketing & Sales •Identify technological sources of information and areas of opportunity for new product direction. Formulate and recommend technical direction for the division/product line •Work closely with a wide variety of internal and external customers to define, meet or exceed design parameters during the design phase •Convey information clearly and effectively through both formal and informal documents, creating an atmosphere in which timely and high quality information flows smoothly between incumbent and others •Prepare technical articles (outside publications) and make technical presentations to Engineering/Directors/Blount •Monitor industry trends, new product introductions and new technologies that PowerNow can use to improve cost and performance, and make recommendations EDUCATION: •BS degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline. •Certified SigmaPlot10 user, Cadence ORCAD Version 16 user, or Altium Protel 10 user preferred SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: •Minimum of five years of relevant experience in an electrical/electronic product design role either leading or supporting new product development and product maintenance •Thorough understanding of basic electronics •Experience with some or all of the following: battery cell technology, motors and motor controls, power conversion, and Programmable Logic Arrays •Working knowledge of computer languages: Assembly and C. •Experience with analog circuit simulation and tools (SPICE, SABER, HSPICE) •Working knowledge of ProE is a plus; working knowledge of OrCAD •Excellent problem-solving skills for complex electronic systems •Ability to test and troubleshoot designs at various stages of completion •Experience with high volume manufacturing and inline testing and related fixturing •Understanding of thermal dynamics; strong mechanical skills •Understanding of FCC compliance issues is beneficial •Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with all departments within the organization •Organized, focused and detail oriented while successfully managing multiple projects •Ability to apply gained knowledge across multiple applications •Knowledge of MS Office Suite EXCELLENT BENEFIT PACKAGE: •Excellent 401(k) plan with company match •Medical, dental and life insurance •Paid vacation and holidays •Educational Aid reimbursement program •Opportunities for career advancement and personal growth •On-site Fitness Center •Credit Union •Free parking and easy access to I-205 •Employee commute program •Employee Assistance Program ABOUT BLOUNT INTERNATIONAL, INC: Blount is a publicly traded (NYSE: BLT) global manufacturer and marketer of replacement parts, equipment, and accessories for the forestry, lawn, and garden; farm, ranch, and agriculture; and construction markets, and is a market leader in manufacturing saw chain, guide bars, and log splitters.
